The course is intended to develop an understanding of African art on its own terms: its sources and meanings; its cultural and intellectual perspectives; its connections with the larger society and modernism. The course will conclude with a preview of contemporary African art and translations of African art in the visual traditions of blacks in the Diaspora (the Americas and the Caribbean).

Suggested museums are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Guggenheim Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Modern Art. There will be four Saturday meetings to be arranged for museum visits. Students will be asked to pay for their own transportation and museum admission.
