The course is intended to develop an understanding of African art on its own terms: its sources and meanings; its cultural and intellectual perspectives; its connections with the larger society and modernism. The course will conclude with a preview of contemporary African art and translations of African art in the visual traditions of blacks in the Diaspora (the Americas and the Caribbean).
