Emphasis is placed on oral and written expression. Grammar review is completed. This course gives the student practice in speaking and understanding current French as used in travel, in the home, in school, in business and in everyday life.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Prerequisite: FREN 281 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course provides intensive oral practice in French in the discussion of social, current, and cultural affairs. Emphasis is on the acquisition of special idioms and vocabulary suitable to conversation about current affairs and personal values. This course is primarily conducted in French and is recommended for all French majors. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC

    Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Prerequisite: FREN 282 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course provides intensive oral practice in discussion of controversial topics, expressing informed opinions regarding current affairs, the arts, and political issues. Emphasis is on creative development of arguments and analyses. Acquisition of appropriate vocabulary is stressed. This course, conducted completely in French, is recommended for all French majors.     Class hours: 3.0 Independent Study A course to provide opportunity for individual research and field projects under the direction of a faculty member in a given department. With the guidance of the faculty member, students prepare and carry out a written learning agreement describing the purposes and outcomes of the project. Students should expect to meet with the supervising faculty member one to two hours each week for conferences. Credit is based upon the number of hours in the semester expected to complete the project (1 unit for 54 hours, 2 units for 108 hours). This course may be taken a maximum of 2 times. For selected disciplines, UC transfer credit may be possible after admission to a UC campus, pending review of appropriate course materials by UC staff. See a counselor for an explanation.     Class hours: 3.0 Laboratory Prerequisite: GEOG 101 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher, or concurrent enrollment. This laboratory/field study is designed to supplement GEOG 101. It introduces the global physical world, its dynamics and spatial relationships. The physical environment is presented as an integration of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere. Furthermore, this course will introduce the physical processes that have shaped the earth, including weather and climate, plate tectonics, hydrological cycle, weathering, and glaciation.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture This course is a survey of the influence of culture and the physical environment on man's activities in major world regions. An examination of the culture, settlement patterns, agriculture, commerce, natural resources and industry of each region will be made.
