    Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Recommendation: ENGL 52 or READ 54 with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher or the equivalent. This is a specialized course designed to present and acquaint students with communication theories and principles relevant to improving communication effectiveness. It focuses on those issues that reflect the evolutionary nature of communication in a variety of contemporary communication areas. The special topic will be decided by the course instructor and announced in the Schedule of Classes. This course may be taken for a maximum of 4 times.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture This course is designed to provide the student an understanding of how speech and language develops in normal monolingual and bilingual children and what factors characterize language delay or a language disorder in children with special needs, including exposure to standardized tests and measures of language development. Practice will be provided in eliciting and analyzing speech/language samples from children representing native and non-native speakers and demonstrating normal and delayed speech/language skills. It is recommended for students majoring in speech pathology, the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Program, elementary education, preschool or special education. Transfer Credit: CSU

    Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Prerequisite: ENGL 100 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course focuses on argument and persuasion in the context of speech communication. This course examines the formation of arguments, the quality and types of evidence used to support claims, the use of language, and the analysis of fallacies. In addition, the course covers the role of the speaker/author, audience and message in argument. Emphasis is on the integration of critical thinking principles with techniques of effective argument, with focus on critiques, essays, debate, and speech writing and delivery. This course provides students with numerous opportunities to compete in multiple events at intercollegiate speech and debate tournaments, and also includes on-campus and/or community speaking opportunities. Intensive improvement of oral communication, organizational, and research skills is emphasized, along with commitment to participate in multiple facets of the program. This course, recommended for all Speech majors, develops scholarship, leadership, a strong team ethic, and an appreciation for the academic competitive experience.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture This course is designed to help the student learn how voice and speech are produced by a study of anatomy and physiology of the speech and hearing mechanism and to learn how to use these mechanisms effectively and efficiently for oral communication. Students will learn phonetic transcription skills using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to assist their work on their own communication skills emphasizing precise articulation. Distinctive features of loudness, rate, pitch variation, vocal variety and controlled respiratory patterns will also be studied. Transfer Credit: CSU
