    Class hours: 6.0 Independent Study A course to provide opportunity for individual research and field projects under the direction of a faculty member in a given department. With the guidance of the faculty member, students prepare and carry out a written learning agreement describing the purposes and outcomes of the project. Students should expect to meet with the supervising faculty member one to two hours each week for conferences. Credit is based upon the number of hours in the semester expected to complete the project (1 unit for 54 hours, 2 units for 108 hours). This course may be taken a maximum of 2 times. For selected disciplines, UC transfer credit may be possible after admission to a UC campus, pending review of appropriate course materials by UC staff.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of the English Placement Process or ENGL 52 or equivalent or SPCH 60 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This survey course is an overview of the diversity of human communication. The student develops an understanding of the communication process, the basic elements of improving interpersonal communication, and how to reduce communication apprehension. Also included are leadership and participation in small groups, intercultural communication interviewing, and speech preparation. This course includes oral presentations, and videotaping is used as an instructional tool. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC* *UC credit limits may apply.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of the English Placement Process or ENGL 52 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course presents theories and principles of communication with an emphasis on application of concepts relevant to intercultural communication. It has a culture general approach focusing on variables which influence the communication process. Assignments and activities involve students in the analysis of different communication patterns across cultures and the exploration and practice of methods, skills and techniques for improving intercultural communication. The interpersonal communication course is an overview of theory and research on human communication. The course is designed with the opportunity to improve students communication skills in a variety of communication contexts. As an introduction to the fundamentals of group discussion, this course focuses on the individual's communication in a small group setting; leadership in groups; group communication norms and processes with emphasis on problem solving and conflict reduction techniques. This course focuses on the analysis and interpretation of both prose and verse literature, including study of voice production, structure and content of literature, and techniques of effective oral communication of meaning from the printed page.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture This course is an introduction to the history of storytelling and the techniques of listening, preparation, and the presentation of stories to various age groups and in various settings.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Recommendation: READ 54 or ENGL 52 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher or satisfactory completion of the English Placement Process. This course presents theories and principles of communication with an emphasis on application of concepts relevant to organizational communication. This course focuses on variables that influence the communication process within the context of business and organizations. The combined application of speaking, listening, writing, and reading skills in business and professional settings will be emphasized. Assignments and activities involve students in the analysis of different communication patterns within organizations and the exploration and practice of methods, skills and techniques for improving communication within the professional setting.     Class hours: 1.0 Lecture This course entails an examination of principles, practices and procedures in formal deliberation. Emphasis is placed on parliamentary law. Transfer Credit: CSU
