MEDT 2053: Medical Billing

This course trains the student in the procedures of billing and how to handle a patient from the initial appointment through the collection process. Students learn how to submit claims to insurance carriers, review medical records, verify patient benefits, submit secondary claims, post payments, and appeal insurance carriers' decisions. Students are required to take the Certified Medical Billing Specialist national certification exam at the completion of the course. A $199 testing fee is charged when a student registers for this course. SU Prerequisites: MEDT1133 Medical Office Administration, MEDT1123 & 1143 Medical Terminology I & II, MEDT2333 Medical Coding I, MEDT1223 Principles of Disease, MEDT2214 Basic Human Anatomy & Physiology or BIOL2224 Anatomy and Physiology I and MEDT2013 Basic Pharmacology or BIOL2234 Anatomy and Physiology II and DATA1123 Fundamentals of Information Technology.

This course only satisfies the requirement for the Medical Office Administration degree. This course will not apply towards general education credit for LPN-RN pre-requisites or other allied health programs. Take this course only if you are majoring in Medical Office Administration.
