This course is designed to acquaint students with the basic clerical skills of a physician office clerk. They will study information flow in the medical office, telephone etiquette, interpersonal sensitivity issues, scheduling, insurance verification, encounter form completion, pre-authorization by insurance company, overview of payors, and an introduction to ICD-9-CM and CPT coding.     College: College of Allied Health Department: Clinical Lab- Resp Care-Hlth Ad Credit Hours: 1 This course has a lecture with 1 hours. This course is designed to introduce students to different classifications of drugs, their purpose, side effects, and interactions. The students will calculate drug dosages as needed for inclusion on the CMS 1500. They will study the most common drugs according to generic and trade names, with dosage and available forms. The students will study the various routes of medication administration. Pre- Requisites: MRIS 103 & BIOL 109. Typically Offered Fall, Spring, Summer

Students will use computer applications for data display. Health Information program students must earn "C" (2.0) or better on first or second attempt. A laboratory/practical course for health information statistics, medical informatics, healthcare registries, database design, healthcare research, analysis of health data, design formats for presentation of health data and health information management department operations. Students will use computer applications for data display. Laboratory experience will reinforce student's understanding of lecture topics from MRIS 122. Health Information students must earn "C" (2.0) or better on first or second attempt. Two unsuccessful attempts (less than "C") will result in dismissal from the Health Information programs. Co- Requisite: MRIS 122.Prerequisites: MRIS 101, ISYS 105 or Proficiency. Typically Offered Spring only.

Students will gain experience working with numbering and filing systems, record assembly and analysis, release of medical information and electronic storage of health records. Pre-Requisites: Departmental approval. Typically Offered Fall, Spring, Summer

    College: College of Allied Health Department: Clinical Lab- Resp Care-Hlth Ad Credit Hours: 3 The student will be assigned to a physician office or other medical office setting for a three week internship where they will gain real-world experience in applying procedures previously taught in the classroom. Students will gain experience answering the telephone, performing check-in and check-out procedures, scheduling patients, verifying insurance information, and answering patient questions. Pre-Requisites: Departmental permission. Typically Offered Fall, Spring, Summer

    College: College of Allied Health Department: Clinical Lab- Resp Care-Hlth Ad Credit Hours: 7 The student will be assigned to a health care facility for a seven week internship where they will gain real-world experience in applying procedures previously taught in the classroom. Students will gain experience analyzing the patient's chart to assure that ordered test reports are placed on the patient's chart, assuring that the record is complete and available to doctors and nurses, and assisting the nurses and doctors by completing other clerical function. Pre-Requisites: Department permission. Typically Offered Fall, Spring, Summer

    College: College of Allied Health Department: Clinical Lab- Resp Care-Hlth Ad Credit Hours: 4 This course has a lecture with 3 hours. This course has a lab with 2 hours. Principles of coding diseases, conditions, and procedures with the International Classification of Disease System. Laboratory practice in the assignment of codes using both computerized and manual methods. Health Information program students must earn "C" (2.0) or better on first or second attempt. Two unsuccessful attempts (less than "C") will result in dismissal form the Health Information programs. Pre- Requisites: MRIS 101, MRIS 103, BIOL 109 or BIOL 205.
