This course is designed as an introduction to the basic concepts and themes in comparative politics. Using a case studies approach, the course compares and contrasts states according to political ideology, process, socialization, historical evolution, public policy, state institutions, and governmental systems. An historical examination of the fundamentals of international relations. Topics pertaining to developed and under-developed nations, security, power, science and technology, and international organization will be discussed with emphasis on the twentieth century. Prerequisite: None / 3 credits.

This 15-hour course is designed to teach advanced skills to nursing assistants and home health aides working with more acutely ill patients in Medicare (sub-acute) units in nursing homes, in-home care, and in hospitals. Prerequisite: High school diploma or GED. Must provide documentation of certification as a nursing assistant or home health aide / 1 credit.

A comprehensive approach to the subject of stress and its effects on health and disease. Stress concepts are addressed within a holistic framework appreciating the physiological, psychological, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects of individuals. Common physical, intrapersonal, interpersonal, environmental, and global stressors are assessed. Current stress interventions are introduced. Emphasis is on integrating knowledge from several disciplines to provide an informed scientific foundation for stress management. Prerequisite: None. PSY101 recommended / 3 credits.

The overall objective of this course is to allow students to explore issues of importance to women in their roles as providers and recipients of health care. This will include a strong emphasis on the biological, social, economical, and political context in which these roles are played out. Prerequisite: None / 3 credits.

This course, although developed for nursing assistants and home health aides, may be of interest to the general public. Topics include health promotion, parenting, hospice care, and care of the sick and disabled child and adolescent. A holistic approach to families is used to prepare the aide to assist in meeting the physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs of children and their care providers. CNA and/or HHA certification is required for employment. Prerequisite: High school diploma or GED; and documented successful completion of at least a seventy-five hour nursing assistant or home health aide course is preferred / 3 credits.

This introductory course, designed for individuals who are bilingual in English and Spanish or English and Portuguese, will focus on the basic competency skills necessary to work as a trained medical interpreter. The course follows the guidelines established by the statewide AHEC Medical Interpreter Training Program. Prerequisite: A score of 70 or better on the sentence skills Computerized Placement Test (CPT) or ESL201. A preregistration interview is required / 3 credits.
