Doctrine, tactics, techniques and procedures of squad and platoon offensive, defensive and patrolling operations. Instruction and practical exercise in the application of the leadership and organizational behavior skills required for the successful execution of small dismounted infantry unit missions. Requires participation in two overnight field training exercises during the fall semester and a six-week ROTC advanced camp during the summer. One class period per week.

    Prerequisite(s): MS 302 Corequisite(s): MS 100 Introduction to the theory of punishment and the dynamics of the Uniform Code of Military Justice as they apply to the commissioned officer and his or her role as a leader. Students will acquire a basic knowledge of apprehension, conduct of investigations, lawful search and seizure, and administration of non-judicial punishment. The Law of Land Warfare as codified in the Geneva and Hague conventions and the officer/leader role in its application will also be discussed. Instruction is presented through a series of lectures, presentations and student participation exercises. Students will also be required to prepare a written after-action report on their advanced camp experience. One class period weekly.

    Prerequisite(s): MS 401 Corequisite(s): MS 100 Formal introduction to the profession of arms, its characteristics, obligations, benefits and responsibilities. Emphasis will be on developing an understanding of the need for ethical conduct and an awareness of and sensitivity to ethical issues. Discussions based on case studies and readings will be used to develop understanding of personal and professional values, values conflict and ethical dilemmas that confront the professional officer. An essay on professionalism and values, based on outside reading, will be required in addition to normal classroom work. One class period weekly

    Prerequisite(s): Any 200-level AST, BIO, CHM, GEO, or PHY course and Marine Studies Consortium Coordinator's permission Note: May be applied to natural sciences elective and possibly as elective credit for other departments on a case-by-case basis. A comprehensive interdisciplinary introduction to the oceans. The sea's complexity and the far-reaching consequences of our interactions with it demand an awareness of the many facets of marine study. Marine issues dealing with sciences, social sciences, humanities and arts are presented with special emphasis placed on bridging the gap between these disciplines. Team taught by faculty from several area universities and academic institutions. Includes field trips.

An interdisciplinary introduction to our most precious resource, water, that is examined from scientific, historical and cultural viewpoints. Examines how we manage water and how it will shape our future, including political, economic and technological dimensions. Includes field trips.

    Prerequisite(s): Any 200-level AST, BIO, CHM, GEO, or PHY course and Marine Studies Consortium Coordinator's permission Note: May be applied to natural sciences elective and possibly as elective credit for other departments on a case-by-case basis. This course presents a survey of the coastal environment, its physical characteristics, natural systems, economic uses, and development pressures. Lectures examine strategies formulated in the United States for land and water resource management in the coastal zone. The roles of federal, state and local government, environmental groups, and resource users are also explored. Finally, by comparing coastal zone management problems in the US to those elsewhere in the world, students gain a global perspective.
