This is a Texas Common Course Number. Prerequisite: Biology 1406 or SCIT 1407 or BIOL 2401. An overview of the morphology, physiology, and taxonomy of representative groups of pathogenic and non-pathogenic organisms. Emphasis is placed on applications to humans and techniques used in growing pure cultures of microorganisms on selected media. A brief preview on public health issues is also presented. Exercises and experiments which emphasize sterile techniques and other techniques used in the study of microorganisms in the clinical laboratory. Laboratory fee required: $17. 3 additional laboratory or activity hours per week. (BIOL 2120)

The morphology, classification, growth, physiology, and genetics of Microorganisms are covered, with emphasis on bacteria. Control of bacterial growth with antibiotics, antiseptics, and disinfectants are also considered. Pathogenesis of disease┐causing bacteria and the role of the immune system in protection from disease are studied. This course satisfies the microbiology requirement for nursing schools.
