  • This course is designed to be the equivalent of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first college year. For some students, this course enables them to undertake, as freshmen, second-year work in the chemistry sequence at their institution or to register for courses in other fields where general chemistry is a prerequisite. For other students, the AP Chemistry course fulfills the laboratory science requirement and frees time for other courses.

You may receive up to 4.00 credits at Oglethorpe University:

  • General Chemistry I is the first semester of a two-semester course sequence. This twosemester sequence is an introduction to the fundamental principles of chemistry, including a study of the theories of the structure of atoms and molecules and the nature of the chemical bond; the properties of gases, liquids and solids; the rates and energetics of chemical reactions; the properties of solutions; chemical equilibria; electro-chemistry and the chemical behavior of representative elements. Prerequisite: Completion of the mathematics requirement as described above. Corequisite: CHM 101L. A grade of "C-" or higher must be earnedin CHM 101 before taking CHM 102.
