  • The AP English Language and Composition course is designed to help students become skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts and to become skilled writers who can compose for a variety of purposes. By their writing and reading in this course, students should become aware of the interactions among a writer's purposes, audience expectations, and subjects, as well as the way generic conventions and the resources of language contribute to effective writing.

You may receive up to 6.00 credits at Onondaga Community College:

  • Develops the skills and forms necessary for writing college-level expository prose. Methods for developing content, organizing information and ideas, and presenting that material to a reader clearly, concisely, and coherently, will be taught. Various readings may be used as a source of models and ideas. Prerequisite: Satisfactory diagnostic tests, verbal scores, and/or writing samples.

  • This course explores the origins and development of the essay form in an academic context through the study of various historical and contemporary essays and asks students to apply this knowledge and experience to their own writing. Students will practice reading and writing different kinds of essays, explore the limits of the essay form, and practice and develop research skills. Additionally, students will become familiar with composing and revising techniques through a series of writing workshops. Students have the opportunity to leave the class as better and more versatile writers. Prerequisite: ENG 104.
