This course is designed to be the equivalent of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first college year. For some students, this course enables them to undertake, as freshmen, second-year work in the chemistry sequence at their institution or to register for courses in other fields where general chemistry is a prerequisite. For other students, the AP Chemistry course fulfills the laboratory science requirement and frees time for other courses.

Topics include atomic theory and structure, chemical bonding, properties of the elements and the periodic table, chemical equations and stoichiometry, states of chemical matter, equilibrium and kinetics, thermodynamics electrochemistry and selected topics in descriptive chemistry. Laboratory section: CHEM 103. Course Objectives Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: (1) Perform basic computations utilizing correct units and significant figures in appropriate problems. (2) Be introduced to contemporary theories of atomic structure and quantum theory. (3) Write balanced chemical equations and calculate the stoichiometric relationships of such equations. (4) Utilize atomic theories to develop models for ionic and covalent bonding. (5) Describe both qualitatively and quantitatively the behavior of matter in different physical states.

Continuation of CHEM 101.Laboratory section: CHEM 104. Prerequisite: CHEM 101.

Basic laboratory skills illustrating important chemical principles. Pre/Corequisite: CHEM 101. Course Objectives (`1) Apply safety procedures and develop team working skills to complete exercises. (2) Develop laboratory skills in the basic chemical principles. (3) Utilize techniques in titration to identify concentrations of samples (4) Perform experiments to classify chemical reactions and study oxidation-reduction.

The application of the principles of ionic equilibrium to qualitative inorganic analysis. Prerequisite or Corequisite: CHEM 102. Prerequisite: CHEM 103.
