  • This course is structured as an introduction to three very different artistic traditions, from different parts of the world. In exploring these different cultures of art, we will get a sense of how, along with styles and techniques, the very purposes of art (what and who it is for, how it works) are different around the world. We will explore the artistic traditions from three very different areas of the globe: North America, the Caribbean, and Asia, spending approximately one month on each of these areas. Each unit will include an experiential component of looking at live art, whether here at Ramapo or in a museum or gallery. Four critical issues will tie these different units together, and in each section we will reconsider these questions in short written assignments. These four themes/critical issues are: 1) The representation of history and group identity; 2) The role of the artist within the society; 3) Ritual, Festival, and Religious Arts; and 4) Constructing the Individual Self: Gender, Class and Identity. 0.000 TO 4.000 Credit Hours 0.000 TO 4.000 Lecture hours Levels: Undergraduate Schedule Types: Lab, Lecture Contemporary Arts College Art History Department Course Attributes: GE-INTERNATIONAL ISSUES
