If you complete the following at Adelphi University:

  • 3 credits This is the first of two courses that stresses critical thinking in regard to theoretical perspectives on human behavior. The course presents the bio-psycho-social perspective with a particular emphasis on multiculturalism. This is followed by an exploration of the various social systems that impact human behavior. This exploration includes an analysis of a variety of theories and application to the social systems students address in practice. The course introduces theories about and perspectives on the human life span and begins a discussion of the life cycle, which is continued in SWK 511, covering conception through middle childhood.

  • 3 credits Prerequisite: SWK 510. This course builds on the foundations acquired in SWK 510 and continues with a multicultural perspective on the human life cycle. It begins with a brief review of the theoretical perspectives covered in SWK 510. It introduces ego psychology and functional and dysfunctional ego mechanisms as well as providing an exploration of concepts relating to stress and coping. It continues the discussion of the human life span in SWK 510 in the context of social systems and relevant theory. The period beginning with adolescence and ending with death is examined.

  • This course investigates how and why people of diverse backgrounds change over time. It surveys theories, research and controversies of human development from conception to death. It analyzes the physical, cognitive and psycho-social development in ecological contexts from multidisciplinary perspectives. Emphasis is on how to promote well-being and growth, and to overcome developmental challenges throughout life span.Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: Identify the basic universal principles underlying human development. Describe the physical, cognitive and psychosocial characteristics of lifespan development. Explain major theories and methodologies related to lifespan human development. Describe and analyze major changes across different stages throughout lifespan (prenatal, infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, aging, and death and dying). Identify and discuss the multi-disciplinary and multi-contextual characteristics of lifespan human development in today's global context. Describe and discuss major crises, disabilities, undesirable developmental outcomes and the historical social/cultural influences (including inequality, discrimination) on developmental differences. Identify and apply strategies for well-being and growth for optimal personal development in today's complex society.
