This course presents a survey of artistic styles from the prehistoric period through the art of the early Renaissance. Periods included are Egyptian, Aegean, Greek, Roman and Etruscan art, and the art of the Middle Ages. Visual art from the first artistic expressions on rocks to the art of emerging civilizations (such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, India, and Africa), and the monuments and small-scale artifacts of the Medieval Ages will be analyzed in its historical, social, political, and broader cultural contexts.
