    All financial aid at Yale is need based and this policy helps to ensure that Yale will be accessible to talented students no matter what their resources. There are no athletic or merit based awards. The Financial Aid Office is committed to working with families in determining a fair and reasonable family contribution and will meet the full demonstrated need of every student including international students for all four years.

Transfer Application Requirements

  • Minimum GPA:
    While GPA is not the only factor that the admissions committee takes into consideration, it may be helpful to note that the average college GPA of admitted transfer candidates is 3.8.
  • Official Transcripts:
    You should arrange with the Registrar of your present college and any previous colleges to send us an official transcript of your college record to date. Forward your Secondary School Report to Yale (transcript of academic record for grades 10-12).
  • SAT Scores:
    You must submit results from either the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Plus Writing. Please review the Standardized Testing for Transfer Applicants for more information.
  • Letters of Recommendation:
    Ask two of your college-level teachers and a college dean (or appropriate administrative official) to complete the faculty evaluation and college report forms, respectively.
  • Essay:
    The personal essays are important. We ask you to explain your reasons for wanting to attend Yale and to discuss the activities and interests that are important to you.
  • Application Fee:
    There is an application fee of $75, which is nonrefundable.
  • Interview:
    Yale does not offer evaluative interviews for transfer applicants.
  • Other Requirements:
    If you are not attending college at this time and are employed, or if you are in college now but previously interrupted your education in order to work, please have your employer submit a letter of recommendation.

Transfer Credit Policy

  • Minimum Grade:
    The lowest grade earned for any course that may be transferred for credit is a C.
  • Credits (Min/Max):
    To earn a bachelor's degree, you must successfully complete a total of 36 course credits. You may transfer as many as 18 course credits. At least 18 of the course credits you apply towards a Yale bachelor’s degree must come from Yale courses.
