Washington and Lee is comprised of two undergraduate divisions, the College and the Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics; and a graduate School of Law. The undergraduate institution offers 39 majors and more than 1,100 courses—an enviable curriculum for a school of only 1,770 undergraduate students. W&L also features the only fully-accredited business school and fully-accredited journalism program among the nation's top-tier liberal arts colleges. The University is located in the historic city of Lexington (population 7,000) in the Great Valley of Virginia about three hours southwest of Washington, D.C.

    There are no merit-based scholarships available for transfer students. Please note that funding for transfer students is very limited, and in most cases, we do not have the resources to provide substantial financial aid for transfer students.

Transfer Application Requirements

  • Minimum GPA:
    Minimum GPA - 2.0. Such an average, however, does not guarantee admission. The successful transfer applicant generally will have achieved at least a B (3.0).
  • Official Transcripts:
    High school and college transcripts from every institution attended are required.
  • SAT Scores:
    SAT/ACT scores are required.
  • Letters of Recommendation:
    Two College Professor Recommendations are required.
  • Essay:
    An essay is required.
  • Interview:
    Though not required, an interview is recommended.
  • Other Requirements:
    A letter of good standing from all institutions previously attended and a School Official's Report Form are required. Applicants must complete the Common Application and the W&L Transfer Student Supplement.

Transfer Credit Policy

  • Minimum Grade:
    In general, credit may be granted for courses taken when a grade of at least a C has been earned.
  • Credits (Min/Max):
    To apply as a transfer applicants must have completed one year of collegiate study. Maximum credits accepted for transfer - 87 semester credits.
