Each year we welcome close to 2,000 transfer students to UW-Madison. These students decide to join us for a variety of reasons and from a wide range of colleges and universities. But when they arrive on campus, they immediately become a member of the Wisconsin community. In fact, one in five UW-Madison students begins as a transfer student.

  • Scholarships and Financial Aid:
    Undergraduates and their families can explore the financial award calculator to see estimated cost and award eligibility. U.S. citizens and permanent residents should complete the FAFSA in order to determine eligibility for grants, loans, and work-study employment. The Office of Student Financial Aid provides a full list of resources to help students apply for financial aid in addition to step-by-step instructions on how to complete the FAFSA.
  • Tuition and Fees:
    The Office of Student Financial Aid lists the cost of attendance and tuition for Wisconsin residents and out-of-state students. Transfer students can find the cost per credit provided by the Registrar’s Office.

    Prior to applying for transfer admission, students must have completed (or be completing) at least 24 semester hours of transferable course work. We do not accept transfer students at the freshman level.

Transfer Application Requirements

  • Minimum GPA:
    Competitive not only for admission to the university, but for your intended major as well. Most transfer students have a GPA of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Please note: GPA calculations will include all grades received for repeated courses; the initial grade, as well as grades received in second and subsequent attempts will be included in the GPA calculation.
  • Official Transcripts:
    Official transcripts from previously attended institutions along with official high school transcripts are required for admission consideration.
  • SAT Scores:
    Results from the ACT or the SAT are not required of transfer applicants. However, if you've taken either test, we encourage you to provide us with your scores.
  • Letters of Recommendation:
    Although not required, recommendations will be considered if submitted. If you choose to submit a letter, it should be from someone who can attest to your collegiate academic ability.
  • Essay:
    The written statements play a critical part in the review of your application. Use the statements to distinguish yourself. Stand out from other applicants and help us to know you beyond your GPA and test scores.
  • Application Fee:
    The nonrefundable $44 application fee must accompany your application.
  • Interview:
    An interview is not required.

Transfer Credit Policy

  • Minimum Grade:
    The lowest grade earned for any course that may be transferred for credit is D.
  • Credits (Min/Max):
    The maximum number of transferable semester credits from a two-year college is 72. There is no credit limit on transferable credits from a four-year university.
