  • Scholarships and Financial Aid:
    You may file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) beginning October 1. No separate application is required for our merit-based scholarships. Transfer Merit Award preference for our highest-level awards will be given to students with: a minimum of 24 transferable credits (based on a semester system) in a diversified program of study and a cumulative grade point average of 3.3. Meeting minimum criteria does not guarantee an award.
  • Tuition and Fees:
    Total tuition and fees for Rhode Island Residents $28,600; Out-of-State/International Residents $46,622; Regional (NEBHE Student Program discount) $38, 538.

    If you've attended another regionally accredited college or university in any capacity after graduating from high school - even if you haven't earned any credits - we welcome you to apply as a transfer student.

Transfer Application Requirements

  • Minimum GPA:
    If you have attempted fewer than 24 transferable credits, you must earn a minimum 2.8 GPA (on a 4.0 scale), be in good standing and eligible to return to institutions previously attended. You must also meet all first-year admission requirements. If you have previously been denied admission to URI, you must first earn 24 transferable credits with at least a 2.5 GPA to be considered again for admission. If you have attempted at least 24 transferable credits You must earn a minimum 2.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale), be in good standing and eligible to return to institutions attended previously. In addition, you must meet basic college-preparatory unit requirements.
  • Official Transcripts:
    Official electronic or printed transcripts from all postsecondary institutions are required. An official high school transcript is required unless you have earned and Associate or Bachelor's degree in a subject similar in content to our offerings.
  • SAT Scores:
    We do not require test scores for transfer applicants, including those with fewer than 24 credits. If you choose to submit your SAT or ACT test scores, they must be sent electronically to URI by the testing agency.
  • Application Fee:
    $65
  • Associates Degree Required:
    If you have earned an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, you must earn a minimum 2.4 GPA (on a 4.0 scale), be in good standing and eligible to return to institutions previously attended.
  • Other Requirements:
    In some of the University’s more competitive majors, there is a limited capacity for admitting transfer students. Competitive majors may require additional coursework and/or a higher GPA.

Transfer Credit Policy

  • Minimum Grade:
    A minimum grade of C is required for any course that may be transferred for credit.
  • Credits (Min/Max):
    A max of of 60 semester hours will transfer from a two-year institution, 90 from a four-year. No more than 1/2 of the credits RI requires for graduation can be transferred from a two-year. You must earn 1/4 of credits required for graduation at RI.
