The University of Michigan welcomes transfer applicants from community colleges, two- and four-year colleges, and universities. As one of the nation's top-ranked universities, offering over 226 undergraduate degree programs, Michigan is an excellent choice for your degree completion. A transfer applicant is defined as any student who has attended any institution of higher education after high school graduation on any basis for any period of time. U-M-Dearborn and U-M-Flint students are considered new transfer students. More than 1200 transfer students enter the University of Michigan each year. With over 3000 transfer applications, admission is competitive.

  • Scholarships and Financial Aid:
    Financial aid for students is available from university, federal, and state programs. Transfer students are considered for most university scholarships upon admission to U-M. You may also be eligible for the U-M Go Blue Guarantee, which offers free tuition to students with family incomes under $65,000 with assets up to $50,000. You are automatically considered when you apply for financial aid and your family income and assets are considered. Each transfer student’s situation varies.
  • Tuition and Fees:
    Michigan Residents Tuition & Fees: $31,484 (Freshman/Sophomores); $33,484 (Juniors/Seniors). Non-Residents: $66,698 (Freshman/Sophomores); $70,292 (Juniors/Seniors).

Transfer Application Requirements

  • Minimum GPA:
    Successful candidates usually will present a distinguished record of college study, earning a cumulative GPA of B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or better. In those schools/colleges where the number of applications exceed available spaces (e.g., College of Literature, Science, and the Arts), admission is highly competitive.
  • Official Transcripts:
    Final official high school/secondary school record, including 9th-12th grades and graduation date or GED results, if applicable. Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions including college transcripts from any dual enrollment courses.
  • SAT Scores:
    Optional: ACT/SAT (only tests taken as a high school student will be accepted). Students are welcome to self-report test scores directly on application.
  • Essay:
    Answers to University of Michigan Questions are required.
  • Application Fee:
    $75 application fee or fee waiver request
  • Interview:
    An interview may be required of some applicants.
  • Associates Degree Required:
    Not required, but if you've earned an AA or AS degree a maximum to 62 semester credits will be accepted for transfer.
  • Other Requirements:
    Optional unless requested: Academic Evaluator/Instructor recommendation, college report, and midyear report

Transfer Credit Policy

  • Minimum Grade:
    A minimum grade of C is required for any course that may be transferred for credit.
  • Credits (Min/Max):
    A maximum of 60 semester credits will be accepted from a four-year institution. You must earn 60 credits at UMich to earn a bachelor's degree.
