    Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. This is used to determine eligibility for federal, state, and institutional funds.
  • Tuition and Fees:
    Total Estimated Full-Time Undergraduate Cost of Attendance: $30,656 In-State, $51,181 Out-of-State, $44,244 NERSP. This includes tuition, fees, room, and board. NERSP gives a tuition break to New England Residents enrolled in certain programs.

  • Accepts Transfers:
    Every year, we welcome more than 1,500 transfer students to the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
  • Technical/Vocation Credit Accepted:
    Internships, co-ops, and technical, vocational, or highly specialized courses are generally not accepted for transfer credit.

Transfer Application Requirements

  • Minimum GPA:
    For transfer applicants, we typically look for a GPA of 2.7 or higher. However, we use a holistic approach during our review process, taking into consideration factors such as most recent completed semester grades, the rigor of classes taken, grades in courses related to your intended major, and other information provided to us as part of the application. Some majors are more selective and have specific GPA and/or prerequisite courses required for admission.
  • Official Transcripts:
    Official transcripts from all colleges/universities you have attended are required. If you apply during your first semester of college, or from colleges with non-standard grading systems, you must also submit official high school transcripts.
  • Letters of Recommendation:
    Transfers are not required to submit letters of recommendation.
  • Essay:
    This is a required part of the application. We want to know something about you. This is an ideal opportunity to provide further information not apparent in your transcripts and other materials.
  • Application Fee:
    Pay the nonrefundable $85 application fee online through the common application process.
  • Other Requirements:
    If you have not been enrolled in college coursework for one or more semesters after high school graduation, please provide an explanation about the reason for the gap/s in your education.

Transfer Credit Policy

  • Minimum Grade:
    Transfer credit is generally awarded if your previous coursework is comparable in content and scope to courses offered by UMass Amherst and you earned a grade of C- (1.7) or higher in the course.
  • Credits (Min/Max):
    Up to 75 transfer or test credits may be applied to UMass Amherst graduation requirements. However, students are required to earn at least 45 semester credits in residence at UMass Amherst.
