This is a recommended program of study for students planning to obtain an Associate in Science Degree in General Studies at a Virginia Community College System institution and transfer to George Mason University for a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work. Degree in General Studies = 60 (62) Footnotes ENG 111 requires a qualifying score on the English Placement Test or EPT (for non-native speakers). Mason also requires 3 sem. hours of Advanced Composition, ENGL 302, which must be taken at Mason. Social Work majors need to take ENG 302 for the social sciences. Please see the details on a possible exemption from ENGL 302 at the website: http://www.gmu.edu/departments/english/composition/302cred.htm SOC 201, 202 meet VCCS's General Studies 6 sem. hour Social Science requirement as well as the B.S. in Social Work SOCI 101 requirement and 3 sem. hours of General Elective. The B.S. in Social Work has a 3 sem. hour requirement for Philosophy or Religious Studies. Select from any VCCS PHI (e.g., PHI 220 or 226) or REL courses. Three hours will meet VCCS's General Studies 3 hr. Humanities requirement. Recommend taking MTH 151 or higher. Math courses numbered below 151 are not designed to transfer. Math requires a qualifying score on the Math Placement Test. SDV 100 will transfer as Mason's UNIV 100 which can be used as a General Elective. Any SDV course can satisfy a VCCS degree requirement, but SDV classes other than 100 are not transferable. This HIS meets VCCS' General Studies History requirement as well as the B.S. in Social Work 3 sem. hour requirement for American History. Requirement for HIST 100 (Western Civilization): Transfer students have fulfilled the requirement if they have already taken any college level history course in European History. If they have not, they will have to take any European History course for which they qualify. Recommended are HIS 211,225,226,243,244. Generally not recommended are HIS 101,102,111,112. HIST 120 (U.S. History): Transfer students have fulfilled the requirement if they have already taken any college level history course in American History. If they have not, they may take any U.S. History for which they qualify. The B.S. in Social Work requires 3 sem. hours of American or English Literature. The 3 sem. hours of Literature will be used toward VCCS' General studies 22 hours of General Electives. Select from VCCS' Eng 241, 242, 243, 244 (ENG 112 is a prerequisite for all VCCS Literature courses). Students whose native language is not English are required to submit a minimum TOEFL score of 570 (paper test) or 230 (computer test) for Mason admission unless they have completed through courses or transfer, ENG 111 and another English course with grades of "C" or better at a VCCS school. ECO 120 and PLS 135 are used toward VCCS' General Studies 22 hours of General Electives as are the PSY 201,202. The PED requirement may be met by: PED 116 (2 cr.) or PED 116 (1 cr.) and a PED activities course or PED 116 (1 cr.) and an RPK class (RPK 205, 207, 208, 216 or 225). SOCW 300 (required), must be taken at Mason. The bachelor's degree required 3 credit hours of fine arts (art history, art, music, theater, dance). Select from VCCS' lecture, studio, ensemble or private lessons' courses for ART or MUS or from SPD 130,131,132,136,141. Prospective graduate students in education should select ART 100, MUS101,121 or 122. Western Civilization general education requirement. This will meet the Global understanding general education requirement. Comments Note 1: To be admitted to the Social Work program, a student must have: Completed at least 45 credits with a G.P.A. of 2.5 At least a "C" in SOCW 301, including a satisfactory evaluation of field experience, and SOCW 351 with a grade of "C" or better Completed BIOL 103 and 104, ENGL 101, SOCI 101, and PSYC 100. Submitted an application for the Social Work major to the Director of Social Work Admissions. Juniors and Sophomores should file this application between Jan. 1 and March 15; juniors between Sept. 1 and Nov. 1. The student's admissions application for the Social Work major will be reviewed for action by Social Work faculty members. A personal interview may be required. Note 2: Mason offers a variety of discipline and interdisciplinary minors (e.g. Urban & Suburban Studies). Consult the Mason catalog for more information. A Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work requires a total of 120 credits of which 45 hours must be in upper level (300/400) courses. While other VCCS courses may also qualify for some of the categories above, we have included those that are most often available. We strongly recommend that you work closely with your VCCS Counselor or Faculty Advisor to assure the most appropriate choices for your major.
