Effective Fall 2007 This is a recommended program of study for students planning to obtain an Associate in Science Degree in Business at a Virginia Community College System institution and transfer to George Mason University's School of Management (SOM). SOM offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Accounting, Finance, Information Systems and Operations Management, Management, and Marketing. Degree in Business Administration = 62 All transfer students from VCCS who have been awarded the AA, AS or AA&S degree and been given the AA/AS waiver by Mason admission will have met all lower division, university wide general education requirements. Such students must still fulfill upper level university general education requirements and any college level requirements. Footnotes Mason also requires 3 semester hours of Advanced Composition, ENGL 302, which must be taken at Mason. Take any course in European History. NOTE: Effective fall 2006, the U S History category of University General Education no longer exists as a core requirement. HIST 120 is now approved for the Social and Behavioral Science category. A two-semester science sequence is recommended. SDV 100 will transfer to Mason as UNIV 100, which can be used as a general elective. Mason requires 3 semester hours of Literature and 3 semester hours of Fine Arts. Literature includes ENG 125, ENG 230 through 279, except for ENG 261 & 262. Select HUM Elective courses from ART 100,111,112,113,121,131,241,231; MUS 101,121,122,225; SPD 130 or 131 to satisfy the Fine Arts requirement at Mason. (Students whose native language is not English are required to submit a minimum TOEFL score of 570 ((paper format)), 230 ((electronic format)) for Mason admission unless they have completed, through courses or transfer, ENG 111 and one other English course with a grade of "C" or better at a VCCS institution.) Requirement for IT 103 (Information Technology). How to complete this requirement: If you took both IST 117 and 127 or 128 prior to Spring 2004; if you took IST 117 in Spring 2004; or if you took ITE 115 Fall 2004 and beyond. Requirement for OM 210: Both MTH 241 and 242 (or BUS 221 and 222) must be completed to meet this requirement. In addition to the VCCS degree requirements, students should consider taking 3 semester hours from PSY 201,202,216,231,232; SOC 201,202,211, or 212 to satisfy the Social and Behavioral Science requirement of School of Management at Mason. **If you are planning on transferring to Mason prior to finishing your AA/AS degree, we highly recommend completing the starred (**) courses before transferring. Permission to take them after acceptance to Mason will be approved but the credit will not transfer and you will not meet the corresponding SOM requirement in the curriculum. Comments Note 1: Admission to Mason's School of Management requires a separate application process. Until the application is processed and approved, a student may not take any upper level course work in their major. Application requirements are: Completion of 48 credit hours with a minimum of 9 credit hours at Mason A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.500 at the end of the semester of application, from all colleges and universities attended Successful completion of the following courses with a grade of C or better: ACCT 203 (ACCT201 and 202) OM 210 (Mason prerequisite: C or better in MATH 108) SOM 301 (Mason co-requisite: C or better in ACCT 203 and OM 210) MATH 108, Introductory Calculus with Business Applications A minimum cumulative and semester GPA of 2.000 at the end of the semester of application Note 2: A minor in business (15 cr.) is available for students with majors outside the School of Management. Required courses for this minor are: MSOM 300, MSOM 301, MSOM 302, MSOM 303, and one of the following: MSOM 304, 305, or 306. The Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Management requires a total of 120 credits of which 45 must be in upper level (300/400) courses. While other VCCS courses may also qualify for some of the categories above, we have included those that are most often available. We strongly recommend that you work closely with your VCCS Counselor or Faculty Advisor to assure the most appropriate choices for your major.
