History The University of Bridgeport (UB) has a long history of welcoming students from Housatonic Community College (HCC). The University of Bridgeport was the first university in the state to grant full junior status to students completing the Associate Degree at HCC. At the same time that UB began this “seamless transfer” program, the institution also initiated a special community college merit scholarship program that makes UB’s private school education very affordable. II. Principles A. The University of Bridgeport has 4,700 students in attendance. Approximately 500 of these students are transfers from area colleges. UB will work closely with HCC and its students to provide a smooth transfer process that enables students to enter UB and gain a quality, private school education in one of over fifty majors. Transfer counselors are available to answer any questions and assist students with the application process and with the continuation of their university education. B. The University of Bridgeport faculty and staff look forward to working collaboratively with our Housatonic Community College partners in helping students achieve their educational goals. III. Transfer Pathway The terms of the UB/HCC agreement are outlined in the following paragraphs: A. The University of Bridgeport assures acceptance (on a space available basis) of an Associate Degree graduate who has earned a grade point average of 2.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale) into most Baccalaureate Degree programs (a 2.5 GPA or better is required for Accounting, Biology, Business Administration, Dental Hygiene, Computer Applications and Information Systems, Marketing, Management, Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Math). B. Those who graduate with the Associate Degree will transfer into UB as a junior. Students who transfer into UB in a related major will, in most cases, be able to complete the Bachelor’s Degree in an additional two years as a full-time student. This assumes entrance into a program requiring 120 credits. Some programs require more credits (e.g. Computer Science and Computer Engineering require 132 credits) and may take longer to complete. C. It is understood that if a student does not have the foundation or skill level necessary to enter an upper level course because he/she has not taken appropriate introductory courses, he/she will be required to take any necessary prerequisite(s). Therefore, the University of Bridgeport cannot assure that every student will complete the requirements for the Baccalaureate Degree in four semesters. D. Transfer students from HCC will receive academic credit for most college level courses applied toward the requirements of the Associate Degree as long as they receive a grade of C or better in a course. A maximum of sixty six (66) credits will be accepted for transfer. E. Non-credit or remedial courses judged to be below college level may not be accepted for transfer. Experiential learning courses, co-ops, internships, practicums will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis. F. The University of Bridgeport Catalog contains information about degree requirements. Students wishing to plan their Associate Degree programs to ensure meeting prerequisites for upper division courses are encouraged to communicate early with the Transfer Counselor at UB to secure specific information about transfer credits. Students who may question the outcome of their transfer evaluation may appeal to the Director of Undergraduate Admissions.
