Cinema Dept Binghamton University Department of Cinema Broome Community College Transfer Planning Guide About the Cinema Department The Department of Cinema develops artists and creative thinkers in cinema, especially in film production and film studies. It fosters critical appreciation of innovative as well as traditional cinematic expression. Students learn how to view cinema works in their social, economic, and historical contexts, as well as in terms of the general history and aesthetics of art. The production program in film and digital media is not oriented toward developing mere technical proficiency, but toward encouraging artistic discovery and expression. Cinema Major The Cinema major consists of six core courses and five electives. The core courses give students experience in the analysis of film and video and the creation of personal works in both media. A set of elective courses is chosen to reflect the student’s dominant interests. Students who wish to stress film and video production should begin the major early enough in their academic careers to allow for the completion of the sequence of courses in those areas. • CINE 121. Experience, History and Analysis of Cinema • CINE 122. Expression and Innovation in Film and Video (Pre-requisite: CINE 121) • CINE 252. Video and Filmmaking I (Pre-requisite: CINE 121 & pre- or co-requisite: CINE 122) • CINE 351. Filmmaking II (Pre-requisites: CINE 121, 122, & 252) • CINE 353. Digital Videomaking II (Pre-requisites: CINE 121, 122, & 252) • CINE 321. Film Theory (Pre-requisite: CINE 121) • Five additional cinema courses, at least three of which must be upper-division courses (courses numbered between 300 and 499). Note: See http://cinema.binghamton.edu/courses.htm for complete list of courses offered as electives in film study, film and video production, and digital photography. Broome Community College Course Equivalencies: Cinema-related course transfer equivalencies are determined by the Cinema Department faculty transfer advisor during new student orientation. The BCC course COM 145 “Contemporary Film Analysis” may be considered as equivalent to CINE 121 following a review of the COM 145 syllabus and an interview with the faculty transfer advisor. For transfer students wishing to receive transfer credit for production courses such as BCC production course COM 205 “Introduction to Filmmaking,” a portfolio is required. A videotape, DVD compilation, or films must be sent to the department chair for review. The role of the student in the production of these works must be clearly established. Deadline for receiving portfolio is Thursday of week before classes begin. The portfolio review committee of the department’s production faculty may award transfer credit for CINE 252, but they may also award partial credit and/or specify additional coursework at Binghamton to satisfy the program’s production requirements. Other film courses from BCC may be approved for transfer as electives on a case-by-case basis. All transferred courses must have a letter grade of C- or better. General Education and the Harpur College Writing Requirement It is strongly recommended that students transferring from two year colleges concentrate on fulfilling the SUNY General Education and Harpur College writing requirements prior to enrolling at Binghamton. For more information on these requirements, please see Harpur Academic Advising at http://harpur-advising.binghamton.edu. While completing the Cinema major you will automatically complete the Aesthetics (A) requirement. At least one course in the Cinema major (CINE 321 Film Theory) will help you complete the writing requirement. Cinema Minor The cinema minor consists of three core courses and three electives for a total of 24 required credit hours. Students should be advised that CINE 122 is a pre-requisite to all studio courses and may be taken concurrently with CINE 252. • CINE 121. Experience, History and Analysis of Cinema • CINE 122.
