As the first public university chartered west of the Appalachian Divide, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville has been engaging students in scholarship and research for over 225 years. We are among the top-ranked national public universities in the country and is in the highest Carnegie research classification. In 2019, 17 students and alumni were Fulbright recipients. The University offers over 360 undergraduate and 530 graduate programs across 11 colleges. Students have opportunity to participate in about 500 clubs. Alumni include Former NFL player Peyton Manning, who has a scholarship program at the school, and author Kurt Vonnegut. The city of Knoxville has urban and natural offerings, including 1000 acres of forests and rivers.

Transfer Application Requirements

  • Minimum GPA:
    We are committed to reviewing all transfer applications for admission. Transfer applicants should have a minimum cumulative 2.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) in transferable academic-level coursework. Students are encouraged to include personal statements and any other supporting documentation that will strengthen their application in addition to their academic coursework.
  • Official Transcripts:
    If you have completed fewer than 24 semester hours, a high school transcript is required.
  • SAT Scores:
    Have your ACT or SAT test scores sent if you have fewer than 24 transferable hours. If your scores are printed on your transcript, it is considered an official score.
  • Letters of Recommendation:
    Transfer application review is a holistic process. Letters of recommendation are not required but are recommended, especially for students who have overcome hurdles.
  • Essay:
    A personal statement is optional, but highly recommended. Personal statements should talk about the desired major, academic successes, growth opportunities and future career goals.
  • Application Fee:
    There is a $50.00 non-refundable application fee
  • Interview:
    An interview is not required.
  • Associates Degree Required:
    Students who earn an Associate of Arts, Science, Fine Arts, or Associate of Science in Teaching with a 3.0 or higher transfer GPA (on a 4.0 scale) from a regionally accredited community college are guaranteed admission into non-competitive programs.
  • Other Requirements:
    Competitive programs in Tickle College of Engineering, the College of Nursing, the College of Architecture and Design, and the College of Arts and Science such as Kinesiology require competitive academic performance including GPA.

Transfer Credit Policy

  • Minimum Grade:
    Transfer credit will be granted only for college level non-remedial courses in which a grade of D- or better was earned. Many UT programs require a grade of C or higher in courses in the major.
  • Credits (Min/Max):
    Students transferring to UT must earn at least 60 semester hours of credit at a four-year college or university and the last 30 semester hours of credit at UT.

Primary delivery method is in-person on campus, with some options for online courses. We also offer four distance education majors that are completely online: Interdisciplinary, Social Work, Agricultural Leadership..., and RN to BSN.
