Swarthmore College, founded in 1864 by members of the Religious Society of Friends as a co-educational institution, occupies a campus of 357 acres of rolling wooded land in and adjacent to the Borough of Swarthmore in Delaware County, Pa. It is a small college by deliberate policy. Its present enrollment is approximately 1,500 men and women students. The Borough of Swarthmore is a residential suburb within half an hour's commuting distance of Philadelphia. College students are able to enjoy both the advantages of nearby rural settings and the opportunities offered by Philadelphia. The College's location also makes possible cooperation with three nearby institutions, Bryn Mawr and Haverford colleges and the University of Pennsylvania.

Transfer Application Requirements

  • Minimum GPA:
    Swarthmore does not publish a minimum GPA requirement for transfer admission consideration.
  • Official Transcripts:
    Transfer applicants must present transcripts for both college and secondary school work, including an official statement indicating that the student is leaving the institution attended in good standing.
  • SAT Scores:
    SAT/ACT scores are required.
  • Letters of Recommendation:
    Two teachers recommendations are required. At least one must be from a recent college instructor. A high school counselor recommendation is also required.
  • Essay:
    Three essays are required.
  • Application Fee:
    A $60 nonrefundable fee must be submitted with the application.
  • Interview:
    Swarthmore does offer transfer applicants the opportunity to interview with an alumnus/a of the college in your local area.
  • Other Requirements:
    All applicants must submit a Dean's Report from the last institution attended and a Secondary School Report. Applicants may choose to submit additional information to supplement the application. See application instructions for details.

Transfer Credit Policy

  • Minimum Grade:
    In general, credit may be granted for courses when a grade of at least a C has been earned.
  • Credits (Min/Max):
    A maximum of 16 courses are transferable. You must complete 16 course credits at Swarthmore (where 32 courses are required) to earn a bachelor's degree.
