    Introduction To Public Health Prerequisite: LAC student with tins course or GER student This course first introduces students to public health and various public health systems and regulating agencies within state, national, and international borders. Secondly, microbes are viewed as potential threat to individual and community safety. Thirdly, aspects of envornmental (soil and water) pollution, water and food security and their impact on community health and public safety are explored. The course delves into the epidemiology of emerging infectious diseases, aspects of infectious and non-infectious disease surveillance systems and the role of technology and communications as tools in the delivery of public health services. Finally, smoking and cancer are studied as public health threats. It will provided an overview of the structure and function of genes and chromosomes and explore the evolutionalry consequences of their behavior in populations.     This course provides general knowledge about the relationship between microbial organisms and the human host. The impact on the socio-economic and environmental health of society is also covered. The course deals with pathogenesis, infection, prevention, and treatment of selected diseases. Microbes include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoans. Three hours lecture per week.

    Applied Human Physiology Prerequisite: BIO 115 or BIO 202 or equivalent or permission of instructor. This course provides a practical study of how the human body functions. Biological mechanisms, which regulate and integrate activity of the major organ systems (such as neuromuscular, cardiovascular, excretory, endocrine, etc.) will be emphasized. Certain pathophysiological processes will be presented. This course does not fulfill the requirements for Eastern's Biology majors or minors.     The course will cover the history of genetics, from Mendel to recombinant DNA, with emphasis on the practical applications, as they relate to human, medical, and agricultural uses. Topics will include an examination of the way in which traits are inherited, the inheritance of specific disorders, the structure and function of DNA, as well as the way in which genetics play a role in cancer, aging, behavior, and other important areas. Three hours lecture per week.

With common names used wherever possible, the general biology of each animal group will be covered. Consideration will be given to how humans and the animals in each group interact; e.g., organisms that cause human disease, animals as human food, poisonous animals, domestic animals.
