An exploration of the varied forms of narrative (and the contexts from which they arise) through a close study of diverse narrative genres, including the epic, romance, novel, and short story. Generally offered every other year. 3 credits

Through weekly writing and class workshops, this course helps students discover material, find and develop an authentic voice, and experiment with different kinds of writing. This course explores the outstanding prose and poetry from selected major Romantic writers such as Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, and Keats from the British literary tradition, and Cooper, Hawthorne, Poe, Emerson, Thoreau, and Melville from the American literary tradition. Generally offered every other year. 3 credits

Students will be introduced to a variety of literature from the cultures of medieval Britain, with an emphasis on changing ideals of heroism, questions of gender, and the development of romance. Readings may include Beowulf; selections from Celtic literature, such as the Tain or Mabinogion; The Lais of Marie de France; Sir Gawain and the Green Knight; Chaucer's Canterbury Tales; and Arthurian romance, such as Malory's Morte D'Arthur. All readings are in modern English translation. Generally offered every other year. 3 credits
