Provides basic knowledge, understanding, and skills required to transcribe medical dictation with accuracy, clarity, and timeliness, applying the principles of professional and ethical conduct.

Uses a simulation approach to build student vocabulary and speed, while providing actual medical transcription of a variety of health care and medical reports at progressively increasing accuracy and productivity standards.

2 CR. (2L) PRQ: CIS 110, equivalent assessment test score, or Department Chair approval. HPR 178 highly recommended. Covers how to use the ICD-9-CM coding system for insurance claims. The course will introduce student to using the HCFA 1500 form generated from the physician's office.

3 CR. (3L) PRQ: CIS 110 or equivalent assessment test score, MOT 208, MOT 209, or Department Chair approval. Covers how to abstract information from medical records and code it for insurance purposes.

3 CR. (3L) PRQ: MOT 210, BIO 106, or permission of instructor. The student will use higher level skills to apply CPT and ICD codes using patient records.
