Students examine the multiple bio-, psycho-, socio-cultural factors important in determining nursing interventions and in setting priorities. In the laboratory experience for the course, students learn procedures for implementation of a variety of skills needed for the care of the childbearing woman and newborn including specimen collection for diagnostic procedures. In the clinical setting, students apply skills and knowledge learned in the classroom and lab to direct nursing care that is provided during the childbearing process under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.

6 (3 + 2 + 64) Prerequisite: Successful completion of NURA courses, labs, and clinicals in accordance with the curriculum sequence earning a "C" or betterThis course focuses on the management of nursing care for adults and older adults experiencing alterations in health. The student is expected to examine the multiple bio-psychosocio- cultural factors important in prioritizing and determining nursing interventions. The nursing process, concept mapping and current research findings are used to organize care in advance of providing care to the patient throughout the care process. This course integrates classroom, clinical and lab components. Students practice and apply skills and knowledge learned in the classroom and lab to direct nursing care.

The course will provide knowledge of both the art and science of effective and appropriate care for children and their families. Focus will be on health promotion, pathophysiology common to children, appropriate health teaching, and knowledge of how all of the above are utilized in an age-appropriate manner. The clinical portion of this class will emphasize the application of the nursing process to appropriate planning and delivery of nursing care for patients with various disease processes and developmental stages.

Teaching-learning theories are the foundation for health promotion and disease prevention activities. Lifestyle practices will be emphasized. Within the community setting, the student under the supervision of a preceptor applies knowledge of public health science, human and nursing theories to make assessments of clients' level of wellness. The student facilitates clients' self-determination and resource identification in moving toward higher levels of wellness through processes of health promotion and disease prevention.

Individualization and prioritization of needs will be addressed. Current research and evidence-based practice will be incorporated into comprehensive teaching plans for both patients and families. Collaboration with other members of the health care team will be practiced.

Under the supervision of experienced clinicians, students plan and provide safe, ethical, principled basic care to selected patients on a psychiatric unit.

This course introduces the student to biomedical ethical theories and principles as well as ethical decision-making models applied to professional nursing. Students apply critical-thinking concepts to applicable codes of ethics, ethical theories, principles, and rules in discussing ethical dilemmas encountered in professional practice. Ethical decision-making models are applied to clinical dilemmas encountered in patients at the beginning, middle, and end of life. Personal, professional, cultural, and spiritual values are examined in the context of ethical dilemmas and their resolution in healthcare.

Major emphasis is placed on accountability and communication.
