The course is a prerequisite for doing senior projects and deals with the creative and practical disciplines required to do festival-quality work. Growth of the film industry; the American studio system; European avant-garde cinema; world cinema; auteurism; film and popular culture; problems of genre. Film theory: the nature of the medium; its major theorists - Griffith, Eisenstein, Arnheim, Bazin, Kracauer, Metz, Mulvey, etc. 1 unit - Sarchett.

    Work is specific genres or with specific techniques of film and video making for advanced students. Block 1: Advanced Topics in Filmmaking: Documentary Filmmaking. A course in writing and directing documentary films. Lectures, screenings, and writing exercises will be combined with practical experience in videography and editing. Discussions will focus on intellectual, ethical, legal, and aesthetic issues related to the making of documentaries. Prerequisite: Film Studies 212 or equivalent. 1 unit - Hudson. Half-Block: Advanced Topics in Filmmaking: Producing for Film, TV, and New Media. This course will examine the real world dynamics of producing for film, teleivison and new media. Utilizing all aspects of a liberal arts education, the course will require the students to navigate through the various stages of production that make up both the "show" and the "business" of show business. Prerequisite: Film Studies 212 or equivalent. .5 unit - Department. Block 7: Advanced Topics in Filmmaking: On Location in Hollywood. A study of the history, culture, and inner workings of the film capital of the world. Classroom study will be combined with field trips, screenings, guest speakers, and other special events. Prerequisite: Film Studies 212 or equivalent (taught in Hollywood) ~$500*. 1 unit - Haskell, Nelson.
