AS 122: Techniques in Photographic Printing

All the work done in this course will be produced in one form of reversed tonality or another; everything that ordinarily is positive will be rendered in the negative. The technical range of processes applied will be broad. We will start with the photogram, cliche verre, chemo-prints, and paper negatives. Our exploration will then continue into more contemporary means, Kodak, direct positive processing, Scala positives inverted, color transparencies reversed, digital flipping, and the like. Prerequisite: Art Studio 217 or Art Studio 117 and a portfolio approved by Charles Walters Materials Fee $30. (Not offered 2008-09.) .5 unit.

Introduction to historic printmaking processes as well as contemporary computer-based techniques. A variety of techniques including etching, lithography, woodcuts, and monotype may be covered. Digital manipulation of imagery in Photoshop for use in photolithography and polymer plate letterpress may also be considered. Although technical processes are introduced, the primary focus is conceptual; emphasis placed on thinking as a graphic artist and printmaker (in reverse, in multiple, etc.) Prerequisite: Art Studio 102,103 or 115. Exploration of topics generally not offered by the department. Open to declared art majors or departmental consent required. Block 3: Intermediate Topics in Studio Art: Costume 3D. This course focuses on the practical creation of performance art projects that will be developed throughout the block and presented as a group production at the end of the course. Students will experiment with linear and non-linear narrative, real and mediated bodies, and interactive/high technologies through experimental performance projects in any available medium, including spoken-word, video, installation, dance, and visual art. The final production will also incorporate live-streaming video that will be presented as a real-time video installation within the Edith Kinney Gaylord Cornerstone Arts Building.
