Topics include changes in gender relations and the roles of women in the family, workplace, and politics; sexuality and science; and the debate over the "woman question."

Analyzes Great Britain's emergence as one of the dominant world powers in the eighteenth century. Particular attention is paid to the realm's social and economic transformation and to its often problematic imperial visions.

Germany from Bismarck's accession as chancellor in 1862 to Hitler's defeat in 1945, with special attention to the economic underpinnings of the period and the process of social and economic modernization.
