San Francisco's Chinatown, the largest Chinese settlement outside Asia, provides a unique opportunity to experience first-hand the interface of an ancient and modern culture. Historical and anthropological perspectives on the Chinese in America to be read prior to the field trip. A field journal and short paper are required to complete the course.
