Focuses on the role of communication in the construction of cultural identities. Class content explores communicative factors that impact identity development, maintenance, and negotiation as a means to make sense of social, cultural, and interpersonal structures of relating within the United States. Primary goals of the course include understanding the social construction of difference as well as social justice strategies for bridging the gap in identity differences to improve interpersonal functioning.

Examines communication that takes place in health contexts. The course covers topics such as communication and language barriers, narratives of illness/health in different cultures, health communication in marginalized communities (global and local), social support networks, health campaigns, and healthcare organizations. In addition, the course surveys current issues and future directions of health communication research and practice.

Explores theoretical and practical aspects of how communication patterns develop in organizations, and what effect these patterns have on various organizational processes and outcomes. Students will examine specific communication issues relevant in all types of organizations as well as discuss contemporary issues which organizations face.

Raises consciousness of ethical issues in everyday life, suggests possible criteria for judgment, and stimulates critical thinking about ethical problems in communication within interpersonal, organizational, mediated, and public/political realms. Students are taught to engage in thoughtful assessment of the communication behaviors of themselves and others. Example course topics include lying and deception, appeals to human emotion in mediated and non-mediated contexts, coercive communication, privacy, and communication and civil liberties.

Students learn how to analyze and evaluate argumentation and its use in relation to controversial topics. They acquire techniques necessary to communicate a standpoint and refute the contentions of others. Designed for students who strive to become more effective in their use of reasoning in communication.
