Explores theoretical and practical aspects of end-of-life from a communication perspective. Students will examine research about topics surrounding and parties affected by end-of-life communication.

Introduces students to the techniques of active listening. This course will focus specifically on listening interactions that occur in interactions about health. The course will cover listening techniques that least to more effective, less confrontational, and more productive health communication interactions.

Explores communication in cultural contexts. Students will be exposed to general principles for communication across cultures, both international and domestic, with the goal of becoming competent communicators. In addition to dealing with "international" contacts, the course will explore "co-cultural" variations--that is, similarities and differences of individuals within the United States, and cultural differences and similarities transnationally in race, gender, sexual orientation, class, etc.

Introduces foundational ideas related to theory and surveys theories of Communication Studies, both general theories and those specific to particular contexts such as interpersonal communication, rhetorical theory, organizational communication theory, and culture and communication. A wide range of readings reflects the multi-disciplinary nature of contemporary Communication Studies. This is a survey course for all students in the major and any student interested in learning more about theory within the field of Communication Studies.

Introduces students to the empirical research process in the field of communication studies. Students learn the basics of empirical research including the planning of studies, quantitative designs, qualitative designs, nonparametric/parametric data analysis, interpretation of results, and scientific measurement of variables. This course also introduces students to the process involved in critically evaluating and reporting on empirical research.

Introduces students to the art of communication analysis and to a variety of critical approaches which help students negotiate their way through a world of messages that compete for attention, influence beliefs and decisions, promote social change, and craft cultural identities.

Explores the dynamics of communication interactions in personal and professional relationships, including issues related to developing and escalating relationships, maintaining fair and satisfying relationships and coping with communication challenges within relationships.

Presents a broad range of theories concerning the nature of differences in communication behavior among different genders. It also explores a variety of topics in gender and communication, including verbal and nonverbal communication; family and relationships; the workplace and the media; feminism and other social movements; and domestic and sexual violence.
