3.00 Credits
Discusses age-related changes in the auditory and vestibular systems emphasizing the impact it has on diagnostic and rehabilitative services to older individuals. Explore the age-related changes in other sensory systems and physiological systems that is essential to meeting the audiological and vestibular needs of older individuals.
-
3.00 Credits
Examines the impact of aural habilitation/rehabilitation on the individual and in a social context as well as psychosocial function. Application of aural habilitation/rehabilitation techniques for the individual and significant others.
-
3.00 Credits
Applies theory and evidence-based practice under close supervision by certified and licensed staff in a controlled clinical setting. Students gain experience in all aspects of audiological clinical practice with a wide variety of patients. The last on-campus clinical experience builds upon previous foundational knowledge and skill to allow the student to evolve into competent clinician with the ability to link theory to real world application.
-
3.00 Credits
Explains the fundamental knowledge of neuroscience related to audiologic practice. Examine how neurons differ at the molecular and cellular levels. Focus on the electrophysiological, molecular, cellular, and anatomical bases of auditory, visual, and somatosensory systems and the related human disorders in the context of audiological practice.
-
3.00 Credits
Analyzes electrophysiologic techniques used to assess nerve integrity and identification of cochlear, retrocochlear, and brainstem dysfunction and pathology. Review of theories and clinical applications of electrocochleography and auditory evoked potentials.
-
3.00 Credits
Discusses issues related to ethical development and practice in the field of audiology as well as multicultural awareness and diversity sensitivity. Explore the code of ethics and the scope of practice for audiology as set by the governing bodies in audiology. Explain an ethical dilemma; rights of an audiology patient, and reimbursement/ funding issues related to the field of audiology.
-
3.00 Credits
Explains basic and advanced principles in medical diagnostic audiology including anatomy and physiology of the auditory/vestibular systems, disorders of the auditory/vestibular systems, radiology and functional brain imaging, pharmacology, genetics, medical treatment, and diagnosis. Review clinical considerations centered around medical audiology. Discuss the importance of appropriate referrals and multidisciplinary intervention team approach.
-
3.00 Credits
Applies theory and evidence-based practice in a real-world setting under close supervision by certified and licensed professionals at various off-campus clinical settings. Students are exposed to a greater variety of procedures, interventions, therapies, counseling, devices, equipment, and report writing with a more diverse patient population. This is the first off-campus experience to expand knowledge and skill that results in well-rounded, high-quality, independent professionals.
-
3.00 Credits
Explains the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular systems. Presents techniques used in a standard (electro) video nystagmography evaluations. Introduces knowledge regarding balance assessments. Understand the symptomatology of a patient. Explain the best clinical practice guidelines for balance testing, patient management, and test interpretations.
-
3.00 Credits
Explores the audiologist's role in implantable auditory system devices. This course will present the concepts required to effectively assess and manage these devices that include cochlear anatomy/neuroanatomy, biological safety, medical evaluation, audiological evaluation/intervention, surgical aspects, implant design, mapping strategies, benefits/risks/ethical issues. Introduce mapping parameters, T & C levels, electrode balance, input dynamic range, maximum dynamic range, compliance, and pulse width.
