-
1.00 Credits
Presents concepts and unifying themes in biology relating to humans. This course teaches students how to apply knowledge from lecture to situations concerning the nature of science, human body organization, form, and function, interrelationships between humans and the environment, and human health-related issues. Not applicable to majors in biology or biomedical sciences. Two hours of lab per week.
-
3.00 Credits
Presents the scientific method, Mendelian genetics, evolution, ecology, and current environmental issues. Introduces the theories that determine heredity and evolution and how those in turn drive ecological relationships at many scales. This course also explores scientific methodology in the evaluation of scientific problems and processes.
-
3.00 Credits
Presents scientific and societal perspectives of the current global mass extinction crisis. Introduces the field of conservation biology and practices of conserving all levels of biodiversity for human and non-human benefit. This course explores patterns of past and current biodiversity, processes that produce biodiversity and the processes that lead to natural and anthropogenic extinction events.
-
3.00 Credits
An introduction to fundamental principles and concepts of biological science relative to current environmental degradation. It provides students with an understanding of how humans have touched and altered nature by evaluating how plants and ecosystems respond. Students will apply cognitive skills to evaluate environmental responses using the scientific method and learn how to be a citizen scientist using crowdsourced data. Labs will utilize the relationship among plants, water, and soils found within their homes and backyards.
-
3.00 Credits
Covers topics across the biological hierarchy from atoms to issues of global ecology including genetics, molecular biology, and evolution. The intent is to further students' understanding of the impact of biology on their lives.
-
3.00 Credits
Introduces fundamental biological concepts in the context of contemporary biological issues that affect human communities and members of broader biotic communities. Course is instructor specific but biological topics may include: medicinal plant uses, conservation of diversity, human reproduction, genetics, disease, climate change, and/or invasive species.
-
3.00 Credits
Presents biological concepts and the process of scientific discovery through the lens of current events. Students will apply basic biological concepts to and research perspectives on each topic. Emphasis will be on developing skills to evaluate and interpret scientific information from a variety of sources.
-
3.00 Credits
Introduces students to the universal language of medicine that describes the human body, its functions, diseases that impact it, and the procedures to correct them. Emphasis will be placed on developing basic medical language skills and the use of medical language within the healthcare setting.
-
4.00 Credits
Presents biological concepts and unifying themes. This course introduces science majors to the nature and process of science, the unity and diversity of living things, the chemical basis of life, cell structure and function, DNA structure and replication, principles of inheritance, and biotechnology. Laboratory work reinforces lecture and emphasizes experimental design, observation, data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
-
4.00 Credits
