Enhances students' ability to sign expressively by teaching strategies and techniques to express clearly fingerspelled words and numbers as well as receptively understanding fingerspelled words and numbers.

Translates frozen texts from English to American Sign Language and from American Sign Language to English (written and/or spoken) translation through a variety of focused practice methods. Students will have time to work with and revise translations resulting in a polished American Sign Language (ASL) or English translation.

Practices skills where students utilize their translation skills towards becoming fluent in consecutively interpreting discourse from ASL to English and English to ASL with delays of a few seconds after the source utterance is finished.

Provides interpreting students with an introductory overview of working with DeafBlind people. Students will become familiar with features of the DeafBlind community, learn common etiologies of deaf-blindness, learn basic communication and guiding skills for use with DeafBlind people, and experience a variety of situations simulating deaf-blindness. Students will learn about support services and assistive technology for those who are DeafBlind. Students will learn interpreting strategies when working with DeafBlind Populations based on vision abilities.

Introduces the students to American Sign Language literature as both recorded and live performances. ASL Literature includes art, traditional folklore, storytelling, poetry, drama, oratory, jokes, and nonfiction narrative. This course includes an analysis of genres in their social and cultural contexts as expressions of Deaf identity and the Deaf experience and how historical and current issues in Deaf culture are represented in literary form.

Utilizes the foundation of interpreting skills previously developed in ASLI365 (formerly ASL365) Consecutive Interpreting. The students will move towards becoming fluent in simultaneously interpreting discourse from ASL to English and English to ASL with delays of a few seconds after the source utterance is finished in this practice-oriented course.

Apply techniques and methods specifically for interpreting for children in the K-12 educational setting as well as content related to post-secondary interpreting. Activities are hands-on in nature, and students will work towards being able to interpret in the educational setting. The course consists primarily of lectures, discussions, guest speakers, interpretation, and role-plays.

Focuses on various issues related to interpreting for specialized populations and situations. Populations that present unique challenges for sign language interpreters include Deaf individuals who have experienced language deprivation and the use of atypical language. Specialized situations including mental health, medical, legal, vocational rehabilitation settings, working in interpreting teams (Deaf and hearing), and performance/platform interpreting. This course will consist primarily of lectures, discussions, guest speakers, demonstrations, and role-plays.

Integrates interpreting skills previously developed in ASL365 Consecutive Interpreting. The students will be able to identify when to use ASL versus contact signing, incorporating strategies to clearly convey English content, and match the consumer's mode of communication or language preference during interactive interpreting settings. This course will consist primarily of lecture, discussion, guest speakers, interactive interpretation, and role-plays.

Discusses various factors of the interpreting profession in order to prepare students for their practicum and working conditions after graduation. Students will also begin their preparation for the national credentialing generalist knowledge examination.
