Examines Central and South American art of the 19th and 20th centuries, the eras of independence and revolution. Topics to be addressed include art and nationalist discourse; legitimization/appropriation of the past; representation of gender; art and dictatorship; art and revolution; "magic realism"; social realism; the politics of muralism; and alternative modernisms. Painting, sculpture and graphic arts, as well photography and architecture, by artists such as Velasco, Posada, Rivera, Siqueiros, Kahlo and Tamayo will be assessed.

Examines the formation and development of art and architecture in lands dominated by Islam from the 7th century to 1600. The course explores cultural and political settings as well as themes that unify the diverse artistic styles of Islamic art, such as geometric and color symbolism, calligraphy, and aniconism.

Examines prehistoric, historic and modern and contemporary?art from Africa, Australia and the South Pacific. The goal of the course is to develop an understanding and critical awareness of African and Oceanic heritage from its early beginnings to the present day with an emphasis on innovations, recurring themes and the contributions of individual artists and artist groups.?

Examines the creation, modification, and persistence of images of women from a global perspective and surveys the history of non-male artists and their contributions to the visual arts from the Middle Ages forward. This course will enhance students' understanding of gender, identity and sexuality issues through art appreciation.

Sharpens research and writing skills in preparation for additional coursework, employment and graduate school. Activities result in a paper that is substantial in content and length, reliant on primary visual and textual material, consistent with methodologies in the field, and professionally crafted and presented. May be substituted for ARH490 as a requirement to graduate. Prerequisite: 60 credit hours.

Allows upper-level students the opportunity to gain experience in the field of art history through practical work-study situations. Internships are jointly administered by a faculty member and a sponsoring institution with the student working approximately 40 hours per credit. Prerequisite: 60 credit hours (Junior standing).

Provides a comprehensive overview of the technologies, applications and issues related to metaverse technologies with a focus on virtual and augmented reality. Applications in fields such as marketing, communication, medicine, science, and education will be explored and the current and potential impact on individuals and society will be investigated. VR and AR applications will be created in class. The course is open to students from all majors.

Examines technologies, processes and issues encountered by creators of immersive and interactive solutions for the metaverse. Current authoring tools such as Unity will be used to create experiences in Virtual, Augmented, and/or Mixed Reality, which will be components of the metaverse. Students will explore interface design, 3D modeling, the authoring tools, and basic coding techniques.
