Provides focused examination of the Latinx community cultural and historical contributions to the United States from colonial times to the present, with emphasis on community, art, literature, ideas, music, historical events, sciences, philosophy, and cultural exchanges. Students gain insights in the Latinx cultural and historical contributions to American society. This course is taught in English.

Provides focused examination of selected topics related to Spanish-speaking nations. The course's reading assignments, deployment of sociological, anthropological and historical terms, and analysis of different cultural, economic, and political phenomena in Spain and Latin America are aimed at deepening students' knowledge of the regions.

Develops students' understanding of everyday life, customs, and social issues in Spain and Latin America. Speaking and listening comprehension exercises in Spanish are supplemented by current primary sources in a communicative context. Anticipated proficiency upon successful completion of the course is the Intermediate-Mid sublevel (based upon the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages).

Contemporary texts, documentaries, films, and other relevant primary sources provide context for in-class discussion and group projects to develop cultural awareness of Spanish and Spanish American health care practices, including medical forms, prescriptions, and interviews with patients.

Contemporary texts, documentaries, films, and other relevant primary sources provide context for in-class discussion and group projects to develop cultural awareness of Spanish and Spanish American law enforcement and homeland security practices.

Analyzes Spanish sound system. Drills on pronunciation and intonation. Selections of prose, poetry, and songs for imitation. Includes a study of the speech organs and how this knowledge helps to articulate and pronounce Spanish language words with more precision and better sentence rhythm. Introduces students to and practice of the International Phonetic Alphabet for transcription of Spanish speech.

Acquaints students with the short story as an expression of culture by Spanish, Spanish American and U.S. Latino authors; sensitizes students to cultural values in the Spanish-speaking world.
