Informal and formal assessment techniques with an emphasis on using assessment to design appropriate intervention programs and techniques: topics include miscue analysis, running records, informal reading inventories, and standardized testing.

Provides graduate students with an opportunity to explore theories and methods for helping students acquire literacy skills. The focus of this course is to provide students opportunity to work with a team of teachers to provide effective small group instruction. Students will design and implement standards-based instruction based on formative, summative and diagnostic literacy-based assessments.

An introduction to the philosophy and techniques of leisure education as a process towards achieving high levels of wellness. It addresses leisure in its historical and modern contexts as well as the relationships between leisure, work, health, and wellness in both individual and societal contexts. The course introduces students to approaches for developing a proactive lifestyle to greater wellness and meets COAPRT (Council on Accreditation of Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Related Fields) accreditation competencies.

Examines the respiratory system anatomy and physiology, medical gas physics, chest radiology, and the principles of electrocardiography. The purpose of the course is to provide a foundation of respiratory care in preparation for the goal of becoming a registered respiratory therapist upon graduation.

Examines and practice fundamental respiratory care assessment and therapeutic procedures in classroom and laboratory. Topics include physical examination of the patient, bedside pulmonary function tests, medical gas therapy, aerosol therapy, airway pharmacology, lung expansion therapy, airway clearance therapy, airway management, and infection control.

Examination and practice of techniques used to measure lung function. This course covers lung function in health and disease. Instruction and practice in the interpretation of pulmonary function tests will be covered in this course.

Includes observation and demonstration in the administration of fundamental respiratory care procedures in the hospital units and diagnostic laboratories. The student will develop knowledge needed to care for patients in the assigned clinical setting. The student will develop personal behaviors consistent with professional expectations of the registered respiratory therapist.

Provides a comprehensive examination of the sampling and analysis of arterial blood and the interpretation of test results. This course covers clinical issues pertaining to acid-base balance, oxygenation, blood gases, and noninvasive blood gas measurements. The student will develop a comprehensive understanding of blood gas interpretation with definitive analysis of oxygenation, acid- base, and ventilation in stable/critical patient situations.

Examines and practice the care of patients requiring continuous mechanical support of ventilation in classroom and laboratory. The mechanics of ventilation and breath delivery is presented along with an introduction of ventilators. Discussion includes the mechanics of ventilator modes, classification, the control interrelations, the electro-pneumatic/microprocessor systems, the audiovisual alarm systems, the need for mechanical ventilation and initial ventilator settings as well as weaning and discontinuation of mechanical ventilation. A selection of current ventilators including noninvasive ventilator and modes are presented during lab and provide hands on experience in troubleshooting, setup, control function, alarm setting and mode changes.
