Examines a range of salient issues related to global migration and how political processes, institutions, and actors work to effectively deal with these issues. Issues covered include policy making involving immigration laws and regulations, human rights, questions of citizenship and belonging, international relations, and electoral campaigning.

Examines the global phenomena of democratization and regime change. Students will study historical trends along with core concepts and theories related to these subjects and apply these to a cross-national selection of cases. As an advanced upper-level elective in Political Science, this course combines traditional instructor-led lecture and discussion with independent research.

Surveys the post-WWII development of US foreign policy; examines government organizations and actors in the US foreign policy process; discusses the non-governmental influences on US foreign policy; and analyzes America?s major foreign policy challenges in the 21st century.

Analyze human rights in the international political system, including contemporary debates, principles of humanitarian intervention, problem of human rights enforcement, networks of activists and organizations, and effective transnational advocacy campaigns; assess the record of states and international organizations to uphold and protect basic human rights; plan, coordinate, and execute an advocacy campaign on behalf of a persecuted scholar(s) identified through the university?s affiliation with Scholars at Risk (SAR).

Introduces regionalism in relation to contemporary, post-Cold War (bipolar), post-Americana (unipolar) paradigms on the world stage. Examines the rush to create regional schemes to fill the post-Cold War political vacuum. Investigates the many forms of regionalism in the world today, in their genesis toward globalization while utilizing the relevant theories of international relations. Addresses the European Union (EU) and emerging regional organization schemes in Asia, Africa, North America, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Examines and analyses the writings and ideas of political philosophers from Socrates to current times. Course content revolves around the fundamental political concepts of sovereignty, citizenship, liberty, justice, law, rights, and responsibilities with significant discussion of the proper authority of the state over the individual and the rights and responsibilities of citizens within a state. Political philosophies will include those of Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, Mill, Locke, Rousseau, and Rawls.

Examines public opinion as a central feature of a healthy democracy. Students investigate the formation of political attitudes, the impact of opinions and political knowledge on the political behavior, the measurement of public opinion, and the responsiveness of government to the opinions of its citizens. Fifteen earned credits are required to enroll.
