Provides the opportunity for students to gain supervised experience in performing jazz and other current professional music idioms in small groups. Includes opportunities for small ensembles to work with faculty coach(es) as well as opportunities to develop independently (with faculty oversight).

Provides opportunities for performance of jazz and jazz improvisation within the context standard jazz band repertoire. Performs in one to two concerts each semester. Open to all university students. Auditions for placement only. Contact the department for details.

Provides opportunities to study and perform a wide variety of traditional, British brass band literature. Presents concerts on and off campus. Brass band instruments include cornet, flugelhorn, alto horn, baritone, euphonium, trombone, E-flat & BB-flat tuba, and percussion GCo most of which are provided by the university. Membership is open to all university students by audition with the course instructor. Membership is limited to instrumentation for a predetermined 26- to 30- piece ensemble.GC

Provides for the study and performance of representative works for guitar ensemble, ranging from large guitar orchestra to small chamber groups (e.g. quartets). Ensemble skills will be improved during the class, including cueing, rehearsal techniques, and the listening skills and body language that are the essence of successful chamber music performance. Musical elements such as phrasing, tone quality, dynamics, etc. will also be an essential part of the class. May perform on and off campus.

Provides for the study and performance of representative works for all combinations of percussion instruments. May include concert percussion (mixed or homogenous), jazz percussion, ethnic/world percussion, Steel Pan Band, electronic percussion, indoor drumline and more. May perform on and off campus.

Documents recital and concert attendance requirement for all music majors. May be repeated at zero credit each semester.

Focuses on the basic rudiments of music and aural skills such as notes, clefs, scales, key signatures, meter and rhythmic values, intervals, chords, and solfege. Prepares students for the fast pace of MUSI201 (Music Theory I) and MUSI202 (Aural Skills I).

Develops an ability to understand and enjoy Western Classical music. Students study principal vocal and instrumental music in Classical form from the Baroque period to the present time. World music, jazz, rock, or other popular genres are not covered in this course. Music reading skill is not required to succeed in this class and a variety of musical backgrounds and experiences is welcome.

Introduces students to a wide variety of music from a variety of cultures and environments. Enables students to develop broader intellectual and aesthetic perspectives on music that is not from their own culture(s) and environment(s) through interactions that include listening, analyzing, and interpreting. Encourages students to consider musical factors and interactions among cultures, use appropriate and authentic sources for musical considerations, and understand interrelationships among multiple perspectives when exploring music of the world.
