Students develop advanced techniques of source building, interviewing, journalistic research, and writing for print and digital audiences. Introduces students to beat journalism, enterprise reporting, investigative techniques, and applying journalism ethics and standards to edit news content. This course is an elective for Media and Journalism majors.

Introduces students to narrative storytelling for print and digital media. Students learn to construct compelling, fact-based stories using journalistic methods of research, writing, and multimedia delivery. Explores various feature story forms, including personality profiles, human-interest stories, historical features, and news features. Students strengthen skills in interviewing, information-gathering, and narrative writing methods. This course is an elective for students majoring in Media and Journalism.?

Introduces the creation of research-based, strategically driven public relations tactics used in various contemporary public relations efforts. Prepares students to write various public relations material to enhance their skill in written communication. Emphasis is placed on audience analysis, strategy, message design, and communication channels. Students will produce public relations material for digital and traditional media. Examines the fundamental theories, concepts, and applications of strategic communication. Students learn the strategic communication process with an emphasis on integrated marketing communication. Areas of study include public relations, advertising, marketing, sales, media planning, brand strategy, digital marketing, and social media. This course is an elective for students majoring in Media and Journalism or for the Public Relations minor.

Specializes in advanced video production techniques, aesthetic topics, technical training, and practical project management. In addition to developing original video content for a variety of media, students will work with a campus organization to design, develop, and produce a client-based video project. This course satisfies an elective requirement in the Media and Journalism program.

Introduces the art of video post-production. Techniques and tools along with theory and practice of various editing styles will be explored in order to gain a better understanding of how stories are constructed during this phase of the video production process. Explores the art of crafting audio narratives for a variety of digital media outlets. Students will produce a variety of audio productions such as soundscapes, commercials, and fiction narratives using voice, sound effects, and professionally mixed music.

Explores media production techniques that enhance story and emotion through cinematography, camera angles and movement, color theory, sound, and lens choice. Students will examine effective aesthetic implementations from media productions within the popular culture while learning aesthetic principles and terminology of the media industry.

This course introduces students to mass media law and the American legal system. The primary legal emphasis for this course focuses on the First Amendment, government censorship, defamation, intellectual property, and broadcast regulation. Additional emphasis is placed on understanding the major ethical frameworks, and the relationship between law and ethics.
