Examines the theory and practice of instructional game design from the perspective of creating learning games to teach and reinforce content. Students conduct a needs analysis, produce design documents, produce prototypes, acquire signoffs on the project, and produce an instructional game. Students also evaluate the efficacy of several different types of games designed to promote learning.

Examines the uses of social media within educational learning environments. Students work with a variety of social media tools to understand how they can be utilized for educational purposes. Aspects of social media explored within this course include social learning and social networking. Specific emphasis is given to the design, implementation, and assessment of using social media tools for learning.

Examines the guidelines and techniques for developing an online course as well as research and theories in eLearning. Students work with various online course development tools to create an asynchronous course, synchronous presentation, and discussion forum. Aspects of online course design explored within this course include course design guidelines, best practices for teaching online, online delivery tools and systems, and building learning communities.

Examines the guidelines and techniques for developing eLearning solutions as well as research and theories of eLearning design. Aspects of eLearning design explored within this course include techniques for successful online learning, incorporation of eLearning into an organization, and types of eLearning (blended, social, synchronous, mobile, game-based, and microlearning), and best practices for designing eLearning solutions. Students work with various online course development tools to create eLearning solutions.

Provides in-depth knowledge and experience in creating and producing various online materials appropriate for a blended approach to teaching and training. Students explore multiple aspects of blended eLearning within this course: Independent asynchronous learning opportunities and their integration with live classroom experiences are the focus of the course. Innovative approaches are also discussed.

Examines in depth knowledge of the methodologies and process of evaluating the effectiveness of e-learning. Topics covered include formative evaluation techniques such as small group, one-to-one, heuristic review, prototyping, and beta testing, and summative evaluation techniques such as cost savings analysis, performance-based return on investment, learning analytics and learning focused balanced score card.

Examines the skills necessary to implement and manage an eLearning initiative within an organization related to a Learning Management System (LMS). The course helps students to consider issues like cultural impact, budget requirements, technological requirements, development requirements, and managerial requirements of an LMS.

Covers emerging issues or specialized content not represented in the main curriculum. Special Topics courses typically investigate the theory, practice, and applications of emerging technologies and techniques within the field of instructional design and technologies.

1.00 - 6.00 Credits
Conduct research in the field of Instructional Technology and preparation of a formal thesis in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Science degree (with Thesis) in Instructional Design and Technology. No more than 6 credit hours may be applied to satisfying the requirements for the Master of Science degree (with Thesis) in Instructional Design and Technology.

Applies instructional design and technology theory to a practical setting. Each internship must last at least 240 hours in length and must be directly related to the general content of the masterGCOs program.
