Presents common drugs used in a healthcare setting. Basic principles of pharmacology and medication are covered. Commonly prescribed drug groups are discussed, specifically addressing the drug's effects on physiology and disease.

Provides students the fundamentals of fitness assessment, exercise prescription, and sports nutrition from a Health Science perspective. Students will develop and apply the skills required to perform a fitness assessment and subsequent exercise prescription in the physically active population. Course content also includes the nutritional requirements for optimal exercise performance.

Introduces basic health issues, emphasizing the development of health literacy skills to enhance students' efficacy in reaching and maintaining a lifestyle conducive to health and wellness for themselves and the community. A foundation of health content will be introduced to serve as a basis for further study in the following topic areas: stress management, sexuality, tobacco, alcohol and other drugs, injury prevention, weight management, nutrition, exercise, and infectious and chronic disease.

Provides an overview of normal structure and function of the human body at an introductory level to prepare students for advanced study. The laboratory component includes practical application of course content using the scientific method. Students will explore the integumentary; skeletal; muscular; nervous; cardiovascular; respiratory; digestion and metabolism; urinary; lymphatic and immune; endocrine and reproductive systems.

Introduces student to the profession of health education in school and public health settings. There is an emphasis on the history of the profession, theoretical foundations of health education, philosophical underpinnings of health, health education and health promotion, determinants of health, accessing and evaluating health information, basic epidemiology, ethics, and responsibilities of health education specialists in the school and community settings.

Explores stress and its impact on wellness and health. Topics include causes of stress, physiological and psychological responses to stress, and stress-related diseases. Students will identify personal stressors and stress responses. Course emphasizes a holistic approach to managing stress, adopting effective coping mechanisms, and practicing relaxation techniques. Students will develop a stress management plan, lifelong skills to promote health, and an understanding of the impact of stress on personal health and future client health.

Examines the social determinants of health and their impact on health inequities and health disparities. This course introduces social justice as a public health issue and explores historical and contemporary issues and theoretical frameworks related to health inequities. Students will examine personal, institutional, community, and policy level responses to these problems. The course will assist students in discovering their ability to create positive change in their world through advocacy, community organization, and collective action.

Provides principles and procedures to meet the needs and interests of elementary-age children in the areas of health and physical education. The course is designed for non-Health and Physical Education majors and addresses elements of effective instruction, management, and assessment in health and physical education. Students will learn to integrate health content and physical activity when teaching other subjects. Students can expect to engage in physical activity during the teaching component of this course.

Introduces students to the broad and growing field of global health promotion. Students explore principles of global health, determinants of health, trends in health across the lifespan nationally and internationally, and organizations that shape public health and health promotion efforts in the United States and globally.
