    Provides an in-depth understanding of pedagogical practices for teaching physical education to PK-12 students. The course will provide cutting-edge curricular and instructional strategies with authentic opportunities to apply those strategies in planning, teaching, assessing and managing students. Aligned with SHAPE America accreditation standards. Restricted to HPE major and students who qualify for professional semester block courses. Prerequisite:    HLPE213 OR HPED213

    A pedagogical application and analysis of classroom teaching techniques in Health Education. Students will gain experience in constructing units of instruction, and in using a variety of teaching aids/strategies to enhance the teaching/learning process. This course is required for Health and Physical Education certification and is designed to meet SHAPE America Health Education Teacher Accreditation standards. Prerequisite:    HLPE213 OR HPED213
  • 3.00 Credits

    Designed to provide the concepts and applications necessary for Physical Education teachers to the unique learning needs of students with disabilities in PK-12 settings. The course provides content and applications for preservice teachers to plan and implement learning experiences with developmentally appropriate adaptations and accommodations associated with best practices, including decisions and strategies for inclusion and placement in the least restrictive environment for PK-12 students. The course includes a clinical teaching experience within an authentic one-hour laboratory setting. This course is designed to meet for state and national physical education standards for accreditation. Prerequisite:    HPED213

    Designed to equip students with knowledge of assessment and evaluation techniques, including basic statistical concepts used in health and physical education. Emphasis will be placed on how to measure performance and using performance-based data to improve instruction and learning in the PreK-12 Health and Physical Education setting. The course is designed to meet the state and national health and physical education standards.
  • 1.00 - 6.00 Credits

    Provides students a culminating experience with on-the-job experience in a variety of physical education-related, professional on-site operations. Students will learn from professionals in the field and be exposed to programs, procedures, and settings. Supervision is provided by both university faculty and the cooperating agency. Experiences may take place in public and private agencies, schools, and athletic settings.

Supervised practice in classrooms with certified teachers and regular practicum sessions introduce the student to the range and scope of a professional educator's responsibilities. University professors supervise the student teachers and facilitate weekly practicum sessions. Corequisite:    HLPE494

    Orients students who are interested in a career within the fields of exercise and/or the health sciences or those who maybe unsure of future employment settings. Topics such as career options, educational and graduate school requirements, the necessary pre-requisites, daily activities, and attributes of the professions are investigated.

    Introduces basic health issues, emphasizing the development of health literacy skills to enhance students' efficacy in reaching and maintaining a lifestyle conducive to health and wellness for themselves and the community. A foundation of health content will be introduced to serve as a basis for further study in the following topic areas: stress management, sexuality, tobacco, alcohol and other drugs, injury prevention, weight management, nutrition, exercise, and infectious and chronic disease.
